Subject: help for paint colors
From: Jack Hardy
Hi all,
I recall a cross reference from 1930's colours to current mfg's numbers. I've looked thru my collection of Octagon Car Club bulletins and a stack of Safety Fast's but don't find any cross reference for paints. Specifically I'm looking for Oxford Blue and Cambridge Blue with a current number that I can get paint chips or paint locally. Anybody have the reference I'm looking for?
Thanks
Jack

I have several 1920's catalogues and Butlers book which have paint charts in. Tekaloid will make paints up to a specifification but I could match the Tekaloid colours to my original books and see how far they vary this weekend if I remember if you want me too

Jack, I really wonder if there were set colors by code for the 30's in the same sense that we had after the war. I am doing my PA in the same blues. Before painting the car, I tried to get the shades while in England. Mike Allison's N type is Oxford and Cambridge blue, so I talked to him about it when I saw him. Looking closely at his car I discovered he had six different shades. He drives and races the N type, and paint match isn't that important to him.
I finally settled on two Ford truck colors that contrast nicely, and appear to be right on with the colors in most books. If you want I will get the codes that I used for you.

Jack, the reference you need is on page 132 of Malcolm Green's "MG Road Cars Volume One - Four Cylinder O.H.C." published by Malcolm at Magna Press, Hooke Road, East Horsley, Nr. Leatherhead, Surrey KT24 5DY, UK, Fax: 011-44-1483-284738 Phone: not published email: probably none.
Every MMM restorer needs this book AND also the Six Cylinder follow up.
You need (dark blue) Oxford Blue - PPG code PEU 1628, ICI code JC79, Peugeot Bleu Rapsodie (light blue) Cambridge Blue - PPG code SAA 136, ICI code GC52, Saab Midnight Blue.
Hope this helps.
Cheers........Pat

Gee what a good response from you all,
Thanks very much. As is luck would have it, after I mailed my plea for help, I decided to look at Malcolm Green's book just in case the paint info was there! And I'm sure you all can guess the result, p 132 is the reference I was recalling.
Thanks again for your help,
Jack
